NTNU has the main responsibility for higher education in technology in Norway, and it is the country’s premier institution for the education of engineers. The university offers several programmes of professional study and a broad academic curriculum in the natural sciences, social sciences, teacher education, humanities, medicine and health sciences, economics, finance and administration, as well as architecture and the arts.
Exponential growth in computing power has brought Artificial Intelligence (AI) into impressive applications such as driverless cars, image recognition and digital assistants. AI has become a central element in the strategy of every company. We believe Norwegian industry has a great potential but is still significantly behind leading institutions in, e.g. the US in terms of utilization of advanced analytics and AI. There is a large potential for strengthening education and research within this field that will benefit healthcare and transport services, the ICT-industry, urban development and green shift in Norway, among other industry sectors. To address this gap, NTNU and Telenor established the “Telenor-NTNU AI-Lab” at NTNU, securing funds for research and development, with the aim at developing new technology and services within AI, IoT and Big Data.
